The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
