The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
