A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.
A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.
The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
